Marquise Brown Signing: 3 Fantasy Impacts

5 min read
Marquise Brown signed with the defending super bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. What does this addition mean for all the fantast pieces in KC? Lets break it down.

Marquise Brown finally did what everyone has been wanting for the past 2 years. Give the Kansas City Chiefs a top-end wide receiver. Hollywood Brown signed a 1-year deal with the Chiefs. It gives the back-to-back Super Bowl champions a legit threat on the outside to pair with superstar tight end Travis Kelce and blossoming wide receiver Rashee Rice. Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid now have another weapon in their arsenal as they look to make history by winning a third title in a row. Some fantasy managers might be trying to win their first title ever and this move has some major impacts. Let’s take a look at whose value increases or possibly decreases with this signing.

Might be time to move off Travis Kelce

I know what you are thinking. “What? He is still a dominant player and the focal point of the offense. No way Marquise Brown will be a major factor. It’s his third team in six years.” Yes, all those things are true but let’s not think that Travis Kelce can somehow beat Father Time. Kelce has been very vocal about the pain he is in when he is not playing. He is 34 after all. Not to mention that his brother Jason Kelce just retired. How long till Travis sees the enjoyment Jason is having and want that for himself? How long till Travis’s personal life starts having a bigger draw? Taylor Swift won’t be on tour forever. This could be the swan song for Kelce.

While he was still amazing in 2023 he did see his lowest target number since 2016 and only had five touchdowns. The emergence of Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco has meant the Chiefs need to rely on Kelce less. They have been trying to replace what Tyreek Hill was in the offense since he left. Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore weren’t it. They now bring in Marquise Brown to hopefully be that other receiving weapon.

Last season Justin Watson was third on the team in targets with 53. Rice was second with 102. I expect Rice to see closer to the 120 mark this year and Marquise Brown should see close to 90. Those targets need to come from somewhere. The Chiefs might end up using Noah Gray or Irv Smith more to help give Kelce some rest during the regular season. Have him be a full go in the playoff run. For fantasy, there is no better time to move off Kelce. We have seen young tight ends like Sam LaPorta and Trey McBride put their hat in the ring as top tight ends with some great play.

Veterans like Mark Andrews, George Kittle, and Evan Engram hold a ton of value. There is hope for breakouts for young skilled players like Kyle Pitts and Dalton Kincaid. Even with a weak draft class Brock Bowers looks to step in and be productive right away. We still have T.J. Hockenson and David Njoku to contend with. Plenty of names that you can move Kelce and get back along with another piece.

Mahomes gets better somehow

We know Patrick Mahomes is great. He is already in the conversation as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time after seven years in the league and playing only six of them. BUT for fantasy Mahomes is far from the definitive top guy. We know rushing quarterbacks will have a higher floor which moves Mahomes down the list. In fact, in 2023 he finished as the QB8 which was his lowest finish since taking over as the starter. Adding Marquise Brown to the mix gives Mahomes the best receiving room he has had in his career. Mahomes had the most dropped passes in 2023 with 35. Marquise Brown only had one last season. That is truly a match made for Hollywood.

Marquise Brown isn’t great at creating separation or contested catches but playing with Mahomes should give him more creative opportunities. Let’s not forget that for the past two seasons, Marquise Brown has been playing with backups for most of his game since Kyler Murray has been injured. This pairing combined with the other pieces in KC increases Mahomes value. He won’t be going higher in drafts because it’s hard to do that when you are already one of the top 3 at your position but he should get back to finishing as that and not frustrate managers as much as he has done the past two years.

Rashee Rice has room to break out

Bringing in Marquise Brown has a huge impact on Rashee Rice and his development. Rice was a bright spot in the Chiefs passing attack last season after Travis Kelce. He finished with 102 targets which is amazing considering he only played on 60% of the total snaps. He should see that number increase. All snaps are not created equal. With the addition of Marquise Brown, Rice should see less of the opposing team’s top corners. With safeties still having to come down to help cover Kelce it should open up room on the back end for Rice.

While Marquise Brown isn’t the dominant receiver he once was back when he was playing for the Baltimore Ravens he is still a playmaker that defensive coordinators will have to account for. Rice will also be able to learn from him as Brown has five years in the league and played in multiple schemes. All that bodes well for the sophomore receiver who should continue to become a fantasy star. I expect him to surpass his WR27 finish from 2023 and be close to the back end of the WR1 range.
