Devy Minute: Troy Franklin

By Tommy Harvey

Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon

6’3, 180lbs

Draft Eligible: 2024

As a Sophomore, Troy Franklin emerged as the true WR1 for the Oregon Ducks last season with 61 receptions, 891 yards, and 9 TDs.  He had an impressive 20.6% target share, 68% catch rate, and a very solid 27% dominator rating, while having a targeted 140.6 QB rating.  Bo Nix was outstanding in 2022, but I believe Franklin made him look better than he would have without him.  I grew more and more impressed with Franklin throughout the 2022 season.  His versatility to work the middle of the field and then have the burst to blow past defenders down field is exactly what I look for with NFL WRs.  I do think he could stand to put on a little bit of muscle in order to absorb NFL hits, but he fits the bill of a potential 1st round pick.

Troy Franklin joined a very good Oregon recruiting class in 2021 with the likes of Dont’e Thornton (since transferred to Tennessee) and Kris Hutson.  Heading into his Junior season, Franklin is likely a top-5 WR in the 2024 NFL Draft (currently WR5 for 2024 and WR11 overall in my devy rankings), with room to move up.  His blazing speed, fluidity, and open-field creativity make him an extremely dangerous target and intriguing NFL prospect.  He will again lead a solid WR room for the Ducks that includes Hutson, incoming transfers Dez Johnson, Gary Bryant Jr., and Traeshon Holden, and talented youngsters Kyler Kasper, Jurrion Dickey, and Ashton Kozart.

As for NFL fit, I would enjoy seeing him paired with a bonafide WR1 with no real WR2 around.  Franklin would be an excellent 2nd option on a team with an established QB/WR duo (i.e. Derek Carr/Chris Olave, Deshaun Watson/Amari Cooper, Josh Allen/Stefon Diggs).  I don’t necessarily view him as a WR1 for an NFL team, but he could possibly develop into that after a few years.  In Devy startups, I would target him at the end of the 2nd round to the beginning of the 3rd round.  In supplementals, I would look toward the back-end of the 1st round to the beginning of the 2nd round.
