Devy Minute: Preston Stone

Devy Minute: Preston Stone

By Tommy Harvey

Preston Stone, QB, SMU

6’1, 209lbs

RS-SO, 21 years old

Draft Eligible: 2024

Preston Stone was a highly recruited, consensus 4*, dual-threat QB out of high school, with an offer list of college football powers (Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and many more).  Ultimately choosing SMU, Stone redshirted in 2021, then served as Tanner Mordecai’s backup in 2022.  Mordecai has transferred to Wisconsin, leaving the Mustang’s QB1 job in Dallas to Stone.

Stone has a very good arm.  Although not elite, he has more than enough arm talent to make NFL throws with good velocity and accuracy…particularly on intermediate throws.  Considered a dual-threat QB coming out of high school, Stone possesses a good ability to move out of the pocket and extend plays.  He may not ever be a high volume runner, but he is very capable of making plays with his legs when needed.

Draft Eligible in 2024, I would not expect Stone to test the NFL waters for at least another two seasons.  2025 is possible, but I would suspect he would be more of a 2026 option with mid-late round NFL Draft capital.  We will know a lot more about him as he gets more film and playing time in the near future.
