Baker Mayfield Signing: 3 Fantasy Impact

3 min read
Baker Mayfield re-signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Having Baker back in the fold has impacts across the team for fantasy football.

Baker Mayfield signed a 3-year $100 million dollar deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returns to the team that revitalized his career. The Bucs also resigned star wide receiver Mike Evans which just brings the whole band back for one more year. The Buccaneers are trying to make a run at a Superbowl and despite losing their offensive coordinator are in a great position to not only win the NFC South but make a deep playoff run. Baker Mayfield got the chance to prove he was still a starter in the NFL last season with the Bucs and got paid because of his outstanding play. This signing impact across fantasy is far-reaching.

The pass catcher value stays the same.

With Baker Mayfield back in the fold, wide receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and tight end Cade Otton retain their value. The passing volume should remain what it was last year. Baker had 566 passing attempts and that number doesn’t look to be coming down a ton. The roles on the offense shouldn’t change. Cade Otton who was the third pass-catching option had a small breakout with four touchdowns. Entering his third year and it being his first with the same quarterback, he should see an increase in targets and importance in the offense. Chris Godwin had a down 2023 but we also saw Mike Evans have a near career year at age 30. The two top dogs should revert back to being closer to equal like they were in 2022. There is also a lot of hope and some buzz about second-year player Trey Palmer. If he can continue to build on his strong rookie season then he might push to have the total targets distributed more. He might end up being a deep sleeper for fantasy managers in 2024. Palmer had five games with six or more targets last year. That number should increase in his sophomore season.

Rachaad White value up

Rachaad White had a breakout career in 2023 and will be looking to repeat that in 2024. Having his quarterback back means the offense doesn’t need to change much. Even with Dave Canales going to coach the Carolina Panthers, head coach Todd Bowels will look to keep things as similar as possible given the success they had in 2023. I expect the Bucs to bring in another back but White will be the starter and given that he got 70 targets from Baker last year he will have that same value now that Baker has re-signed. Rachaad White’s acquisition cost is currently 1.08 according to Dynasty Pros trace Calculator. His value probably doesn’t go up much from there but if you can get him for a late first you should return value.  A starter who not only gets volume but also gets the pass-catching work is almost unheard of in today’s NFL and that brings weekly value to fantasy football. Owners who picked him up last year are reaping the benefit.

Baker Mayfield stock up

With Baker Mayfield back under center in Tampa his value should rise. He quietly finished as QB10 last season. He had 28 touchdowns which was a career high but also had 10 interceptions. I don’t think Baker will be able to finish that high again but his current value in fantasy is low. The new deal locks him in as the Bucs starter for up to three years. Having that certainty is important for fantasy managers. If you can scoop him up cheaply for a late 2nd round pick you should get value.  He isn’t playing for a contract like last year but that seemed less of a motivation for the former first overall pick. Baker seemed to really enjoy his time in Tampa and that probably played a large role in his re-signing. He should continue the feel-good, fun vibes in 2024 and be a fun player to own for fantasy managers.
