Aaron Jones Signing: 3 Fantasy Impacts

4 min read

Aaron Jones has had a busy two days. First, he saw the Green Bay Packers sing running back Josh Jacobs only to hours later cut Jones who had spent his first seven years in green and gold. Aaron Jones wasn't on the free agency market long as it was confirmed the next morning that he had reached an agreement with division rivals Minnesota Vikings. It's a deal worth $7 million for one year. Aaron Jones now gets a chance to not only stay in the division that he has dominated but also get at least two revenge games against his former team. A team that he tried to work with to restructure his contract but clearly undervalued him. Now that Aaron Jones will be screaming SKOL and wearing purple and gold we have to look at the fantasy fallout.

Ty Chandler SZN is over

It was fun while it lasted but the hype train for Ty Chandler was short-lived. There were some believers this time last year and the following grew as he took over later in the 2023 season for Alexander Mattison. The number of truthers ballooned even more earlier this month when it was announced that Mattison was being let go. Many fantasy managers believed that Chandler would get a shot at being the starting guy. With Aaron Jones now coming to town those dreams can be put to bed. While Chandler is a solid back who is entering his third year we haven't seen him be the leader of a backfield like we have with Aaron Jones. Chandler will probably need Jones to miss some games to get significant opportunities. Chandler isn't known as a pass catcher which means he won't be out there on third down. I'm holding him if I have him in fantasy but I'm not spending more than a fourth-round pick to acquire him.

Wheels up for Aaron Jones

This might end up being the best thing for Aaron Jones. He goes from a team that was having him split work with A.J. Dillon to a team that will probably give him 250+ carries. The Vikings lost quarterback Kirk Cousins and replaced him with Sam Darnold so I don't expect a high-volume passing attack coming from them this season. The good news is that the threat of a passing attack removes defenders from the box. With Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson still out their defenses will have to account for them. This should allow Aaron Jones to find plenty of running room and reach the second level more easily. Jones is also a capable pass father. In any season where he has played more than 12 games, he has over 60 targets. Whether it's Sam Darnold or a rookie under center Aaron Jones will be a safety valve and should have plenty of pass-catching work. If you can scoop him for a second-round pick right now you will reap the rewards later.

Jordan Addison taking a step back

Jordan Addison had in all accounts a good rookie season. He saw 104 targets catching 70 of them for 911 yards and 10 touchdowns. He finished as the WR23 for fantasy. I fear that with the Aaron Jones signing, Addison might be taking a step back in his sophomore year. in 2023 the Vikings threw the ball 63.31% of the time which was third most in the NFL. That was with Kirk Cousins at the helm. That piece is gone and currently a significant downgrade. Justin Jefferson only played in 10 games which increased the volume for Addison.

Lost in all of that is that the Vikings wanted to run the ball but injuries constantly hindered that. First Alexander Mattison got hurt. They went out and signed Cam Akers to possibly be the guy and need with Ty Chandler. The running backs for Minnesota had eight games where the lead rusher had over 15 carries. That is a sign that they want to be a run-first team. Injuries and the game script took them out of that. Signing Aaron Jones brings them a power rusher who can control the flow of the game and allow them to work the game clock. Obviously, it's a passing league so they will still need to throw it but Addison now falls to possibly the fourth option behind Jefferson, Hockenson, and Jones. The pathway to him repeating his rookie year production has too many hurdles that I'm out.
